Air” approach
(Nantucket, MA) – April 22, 2005.
Century House, the oldest continuously operating inn on
Nantucket, is planning an educational and paint-out week from June
9-14 providing a unique opportunity for local professional
artists, watercolorists, and photographers to explore innovative
ideas, discuss new art techniques and share their creativity in a
relaxed setting.
Debuting this year, the innkeepers of the Century House
will set aside a week each season for various New England artists
to catch up with Nantucket and the art world, through informal
paint-out sessions, and art stimulation seminars.
This year, the Artist's Week will put the spotlight on a dozen
renowned artists interacting with various professionals close to
the art world. Instructions will include, The Use of Press
Coverage, Exposing Yourself, Art Dealer Review, How Not to Destroy
Your Own Career, The Small Painting and the Niche Market of
Nantucket, Color Accuracy and Photos, and a legal review of
copyright law.
In a very informal atmosphere, each of the attending artists will
be asked to give a 20 minute review of their work, techniques, and
any special association with the Nantucket “En Plein Air”
approach.
The Century House
dates back to the Cliff Road land purchase in 1833. According to
research performed by Edouard A. Stackpole, renowned Nantucket
historian and former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, the
Century House was built by a member of an old Nantucket family of
Scottish roots, Captain Robert Calder. It is said that Capt.
Calder chose this site because of the privacy, the ocean breezes,
the views, and the genuine serenity the location provided in the
1840’s and still exhibits today. According to Mr. Stackpole, the
Century House is the oldest continuously operating guesthouse on
Nantucket Island to date.
