"Over the last ten years, through the kind and energetic encouragement of JeanE and Gerry
(not to mention the fabulous accommodations of Century House), Nantucket has become one of the places
which puts me in a state of heart where I have done some of my best work."

NANTUCKET 'S CENTURY HOUSE WELCOMES ARTIST Christopher Magadini

Artists Discover the Freedoms of Nantucket

(Nantucket, MA) – June 2007The Century House, the oldest continuously operating inn on Nantucket, as part of its third annual educational Art Charrette, is pleased to welcome renowned artist Christopher Magadini, to participate for the first time at the inn’s 2007 Artists in Residence Program from June 3-10.  Magadini will be joining artists Barbara Lussier and Robert Duffy at the Century House.

Magadini’s style could be called Contemporary Impressionism although the pastoral quality of his work recalls the naturalism of 19th Century American Landscape Painting. An incredible technician, Magadini is a skilled painter who has synthesized characteristics of these movements—and has even drawn from abstraction—to create his own style where the power of nature to stir the human spirit becomes paramount.

In all of his oils, Mr. Magadini takes full advantage of the medium’s wonderful qualities.

No matter the size, 4”x 6” up to 30” by 40”, this work exhibits a rich painterly surface enhanced by masterful brushwork. His stated goal of “capturing the illusion of space and form while retaining a beautiful and interesting surface” is revealed in these paintings.

Magadini said, “For me, painting is not simply the replication of what the eye sees. It is the creation of an image that embodies my thoughts and feelings. These, I think, are fairly universal, and I seek to communicate and connect with viewers on that level.”

In recent years, Magadini has become known as a plein air painter. His growing popularity has brought avid collectors to galleries where his work has been exhibited worldwide.

A former illustrator, Magadini’s credits include covers for Reader's Digest magazine, illustrations and promotional brochures for Reader's Digest Books, and illustrations for Guideposts, Angels, Field & Stream, Boating, Audubon, Flying, Women's Day, Scholastic Books and Zebra Books. He has designed stamps for the United Nations and the current American Heritage Series Collectors Plates for Royal Copenhagen USA. Illustrated books include Bible Life and Times; The Illustrated Dictionary of Bible Life and Times; After Jesus; A Passage to India; Great Disasters and Rodale's Naturally Great Foods Cookbook.

Magadini has taught at Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY, and has been a guest lecturer at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He lives in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, and summers in the Adirondacks.

An evolution from the June 2005 Professional Artist’s Week, the artistic Charrettes offer a series of intimate stays orchestrated by a long term Century House Artist-in-Residence “Point/Master Artist” who invites a few fellow artists to the Century House, providing a unique opportunity for the group to create its own energy with the purpose of congregating and critiquing each other’s work at the end of the day.

The innkeepers of the Century House also welcome guests to stay during the Charrettes, which take place from mid-May through October on select dates.  While guests cannot participate in the creative process of the group, they are encouraged to observe the artists’ day and connect with the artists during their Century House stay.

“We are delighted that the Artist in Residence Program has evolved so well here at the Century House.  We look forward to seeing Nantucket through their eyes and potentially sharing the experience with some of our guests,” said innkeeper duo Gerry Connick and JeanEllen Heron.

The Century House dates back to the Cliff Road land purchase in 1833. According to research performed by Edouard A. Stackpole, renowned Nantucket historian and former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, the Century House was built by a member of an old Nantucket family of Scottish roots, Captain Robert Calder. It is said that Capt. Calder chose this site because of the privacy, the ocean breezes, the views, and the genuine serenity the location provided in the 1840’s and still exhibits today.  According to Mr. Stackpole, the Century House is the oldest continuously operating guesthouse on Nantucket Island to date.
