One of the highlights is the immense wraparound porch, complete with rocking

CENTURY HOUSE REVIEW:
Wedding Bells Chime Over
Nantucket Sound
By Stephen L. Cabral
If you are one of those SouthCoast natives, that
dreams of mixing a dash of history with some salty,
nautical charm to your wedding celebration, then set
your course to Nantucket Sound. Listen carefully!
You just might hear wedding bells in the wind. Now
let your imagination sail beyond the horizon to the
sandy shores of Nantucket. That’s where you will
find the Century House, one of the oldest
continuously operating inns on the island. Captain
Robert Calder, a Nantucket whaler of Scottish
descent, built the 18 room house in 1840. Century
House became a rooming/boarding house in the early
1870’s following the decline of the whaling
industry. The business thrived in the gay 90’ and
roaring 20’s; survived the Great Depression and
witnessed the flower power of the 60’s. This site
finally joined the modern Bed & Breakfast trend with
fancy private baths and air conditioning in the
1980’s...

NANTUCKET REVIEW:
Historic inn marries a love of art and the
printed word
Well, almost: Each
summer, six to 10 invited master artists who make
their living solely through
art have been guests -
free of charge - at Century House on Nantucket. The
inn this season celebrates its 175th anniversary,
making it the island's oldest continually operating
guesthouse, according to innkeepers Gerry Connick
and his wife, Jean Ellen Heron, who this year mark
their 25th anniversary of ownership...The
artist-in-residence program has been in effect
almost all of those years, with artists paying only
in scenes they capture around the island. They can
stay for a few days or a week or more in the
flexible program...The
inn undergoes regular renovation, Connick said,
averaging a room and a half per year, at a cost of
roughly $100,000 per room. This year, that included
the Black Orchid where we stayed, a corner room with
a small, private veranda overlooking the restored
18th-century Kite Hill Estate...The
room has a high trey
ceiling with layered molding, a Swarovski crystal
chandelier, original antique cast-iron fireplace,
Victorian marble-top bureau, and wide pine floors.
Decorated with pistachio and dark chocolate paint
and wallpaper, highlighted with deep purple accents,
the room also has Swarovski wall sconces. All rooms
are unique, their names reflecting their character
and design scheme, included the sanguine-toned Red
Dahlia, with its unabashedly bright red antique
dresser...

NANTUCKET REVIEW:
Destination Nantucket
Nantucket, a vacation spot since 1880, is
resolute in its quest to remain "yesterday's
island." In other words, no Starbucks. But what it
lacks in 21st-century brand
names, it makes up for with miles of beaches,
photography-friendly light and landscapes, plenty of
lighthouses and a Main Street jammed with art
galleries and independent restaurants. Nantucket is
so synonymous with "summer vacation" that some
locals advise visiting during September. It's
chillier, yes, but by then the crowds have gone and
the restaurants, weary of impressing tourists, have
returned to tried-and-true menus. Sixteen-room
Century House, opened in 1833, has a
flower-festooned wraparound front porch; the inn is
within walking distance of Main Street and beaches.
Breakfast and afternoon tea are served daily, and
the innkeeper has a stash of beach-worthy paperbacks
on hand (superior rooms, breakfast and tea included,
from $285,

NANTUCKET BED AND BREAKFAST REVIEW: CELEBRATING 175
YEARS OF NANTUCKET FREEDOM AT THE CENTURY HOUSE
What a unique treat it was to be able to stay at the
Century House
built by Captain Robert Calder in 1833. Why
unique? Well for us, after doing some research, we
believe that Captain Calder was my husbands fifth
great grandfather and while walking through the home
and up and down the stairs, my husband felt as if he
were repeating history. How exciting it was for him
to walk where one of his relatives walked over 175
years ago. While we sat outside smelling the sea
air, we couldn't help but wonder if Captain Calder
sat where we sat, thinking about his travels,
Scotland, and fishing while enjoying a glass of
scotch from his homeland. Even though the inn is now
surrounded by other beautiful historical homes and
the view of the ocean is no more, Captain Calder
placed his home perfectly atop a hill surely to keep
an eye on the ocean and to enjoy the romantic sea
breezes.
The cozy and enchanting rooms were full to capacity
during our stay, yet it always felt private,
peaceful, and quiet. The inns traditional and
highly acclaimed morning buffet breakfast of fresh
fruits, nuts, cereals, muffins, juice and coffee was
a healthy start to the day and I enjoyed the hot
cookies waiting in the sitting room on a platter in
the evening. What a perfect treat before tucking
ourselves in between the soft cotton sheets of our
bed while preparing ourselves for a restful nights
sleep.

They have been residents since July 2001. I asked
them where they had been prior to moving here, and

"Art is many different
things to many different people. To Gerry Connick

very pretty way to cover up holes in the wall.
“There were a lot of holes,” Connick says now, who

Reviews:
Granted,
most Americans don't think of upstate New York when
pondering where to take their summer vacations. But the
fact is, the Eastern United States offers beautiful
scenery, relative isolation and, best of all, not a
pesky Euro in sight. From rural Maine and New Hampshire
to Palm Beach, Fla.--and everything in between (the
Berkshires, the Adirondacks, the Hamptons, Martha's
Vineyard and
Nantucket)--the
Eastern U.S. offers a surprising number of options for
travelers looking to stay local (relatively speaking).
Since you're saving on airfare, we recommend you splurge
at The Point in Saranac Lake, N.Y. Room rates start at
$1,250 per night over the summer, so it may surprise you
to learn that the lodgings are made of notched logs and
there aren't even phones in the guest rooms. But all
sporting activities and meals are included in the
nightly rate, and the dining facilities are legendary,
with meals planned weeks in advance to take into account
the allergies or favorite dishes of upcoming guests.

Reviews:
Destination
of the Week:
Nantucket Beds
"Some say Nantucket, like the Hamptons, is best enjoyed
from the comfort of a friend's summer house. In the
wealthiest East Coast enclaves, the most desirable real
estate--sprawling beach-side houses off some quiet lane
named after a pond or a bird--belongs to home-owners, and
not luxury hotel chains. In fact, luxury hotels are few and
far between in the best neighborhoods, and where they do
exist, visitors must face the indignity of paying over $525
per night to stay in them while their luckier friends, with
home-owning friends of their own in the area, stay for free. Visitors...can
stay in a luxury inn with rooms decorated and maintained to
feel like their very own, or at least their new Nantucket
best friend's--and a very generous best friend at
that...Breakfast is complimentary, as is the chocolate,
freshly baked cookies, crackers and cheese placed in the
Inn's central dining room throughout the day. These snacks
are a good chance for fortification before setting off to
explore the island on bicycles: The picturesque towns of Sconset and Madaket are both well within biking distance,
and Cliff beach, a good spot for kite- and wind-surfing,
entails a stroll past Tommy Hilfiger's house. "

Nantucket Reviews:
"This 1840
sea captain's home became a rooming house in the early 1870s
and has welcomed the public ever since, setting an island
record. Rooms are furnished with a mix of reproductions and
antiques -- the feel favors comfort over style -- and the
book-filled common room invites lounging, as does the
wraparound porch."

Reviews:
"Another
hallmark of the Century House are the homemade cookies
available in the living room throughout the day and the
always available fresh coffee, tea and other treats. The
producers of Paramount Pictures hit TV show “Wings”
chose Century House as their Nantucket home when first
visiting the island in 1989 to scout locations for the
popular television sitcom. In the subsequent years the inn
became a star, often appearing on the show in cameo
performances and was popular enough that in 1994 the
innkeepers were invited to do a walk-on."

Nantucket Reviews:
"The
location of The Century House is key to its success.
Although its in-town address makes it a convenient walk to
most restaurants and shops, its residential setting ensures
a peaceful vacation. The slight
elevation of the property allows the cooling breezes to
reach the wrap-around veranda."

NBC'S TV SHOW "WINGS"
|
|
|

Nantucket Reviews:
If
you are a fan of the NBC television show "Wings,"
you may find The Century House sign or facade
familiar. Executive producers David Lee, Peter Casey
and David Angell chose The Century House as their
B&B when first visiting the island in 1989 to scout
locations. In the following years, scenes of the inn
have often been featured on the show, and we were
invited to watch a taping (and to be extras!) of a
September, 1994 episode.

Staying
at a bed and breakfast. Approach country inn weekends
with reservations.
"Looking for a spur-of-the moment getaway to Nantucket? Try
January. Autumn foliage on the island off Massachusetts
consists mainly of the reddening of the cranberry bogs, but
Nantucket B&Bs are booked through September anyway.
People who come here in July are surprised to learn that
it’s just as busy in September,” says Jean Heron-Connick,
…with her husband, Gerry, of Century House..."

“It was exciting

to experience

Heron said.
“The second

"Gerry and Jean decided if they
couldn't be in Nantucket, why not bring Nantucket to Palm
Beach. The annual Daffodil
Festival at the end of April is a
cheerful celebration of springtime on Nantucket Island, when
millions of blooming daffodils transform the wintry
landscape."
