Freedoms of Nantucket Little Known Treasures

February 2006
Dear Nantucket Lover!”there is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life — happiness, freedom, and peace of mind — are always attained by giving them to someone else.” P.C. MarchIf we were to add to the list, the fourth thing, would be love. To all of us love means different things. Perhaps love for something, love for someone, love for some place…

Century House selected by the 2006 ZAGAT Top US Hotels, Resorts, and Spas!

Included for the first time in the prestigious Zagat Guide, the Century House is proud to be among other nationally acclaimed properties!

“If you can tear yourself away from “Gerry’s Berry Buffet Breakfast” or afternoon cookies and cream on the veranda, you might consider touring the surrounding area where this charming 1830′s B&B is located; classic styling is met with luxurious modern amenities (Molton Brown bath products) at this cliffside spot frequented by TV producers scouting locations and soaking up works of the former artists- in-residence.”

Meet our Guests!

Our guests are our most important assets. Without them the Century House would not exist. They are not like our antique furniture or the collection of paintings. They make different sounds, come in different shapes, sizes and colors, and have personalities. We enjoy them because they grow up, change, challenge, make you laugh or cry, and then they become part of the Century House.

The DeCata/Kullman family from Connecticut: Michael, Debra, Michelle and Jennifer love the island and the Century House. The couple first arrived on Nantucket 20 years ago and then vacationed last season with their girls. They decided to return Season 2006. They wanted to getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to a more simple life (no Starbucks, traffic, long work hours, rules – “just a time to reconnect with the family.”) Their love for Nantucket doubled when the girls discovered the freedom and safety of riding their bikes. Century House is special to them because of “the family atmosphere” and the homemade chocolate-chip- cookies.

Michelle is an avid equestrian and competes. She is also the family photographer. Jennifer, the youngest, dances and plays the flute. They both enjoy the freedom and safety that the island provides. When asked what are some fond memories of Nantucket, they listed: the homelike atmosphere, Gerry calling a cab for them and being so friendly, riding the bikes all over town, walking to the beach, and meeting other guests with whom they shared stories.

These are the guests who make Nantucket and Century House what it is. The island is still an escape for a brief time. They are the ones a hundred years from now, articles will be written about. Their children’s children will come and Nantucket will still be the same…the indigenous, ever-freeing, ever- revivifying, the place of dreams and past remembrances.

Century House Innkeepers in the Off-Season

Innkeepers Gerry & JeanE manage to keep the inn afloat by real estate sales in Palm Beach in “the Other Season!” Since most of you know their lives from your Nantucket experience, we thought we would introduce you to their winter lifestyle.

Recently they attended the Palm Beach Cavallino Classic held annually at the historic Breakers Hotel in mid- January! Surely one of the attendees will have a real-estate interest they can accommodate. Pictured right Jean Ellen is greeting a prospect at their Mediterranean exclusive listing, one of the current selections available through their brokerage, thecorcorangroup, whose office is just about 500 yards from the hotel. Please let them know if they can assist you with your Florida real-estate investment interests.

Explore Coffin Park!

Discover the Freedoms of Nantucket!Someone once said that “those who wonder are never lost.” In the truest sense, the wonderers are explorers without a map. They are the ones who live by no one’s rules or blueprints; but love the unknown. They live to explore and discover. On Nantucket they might get lost and stumble across any one of its many treasured possessions. One of the island’s newest gems is COFFIN PARK, just minutes from the Century House on Cliff Road and conveniently located next to one of our favorite picnic eateries, Something Natural!!! Nantucket cleared out this premiere site the Winter of 2005. A semi-swampy parcel of land owned by the Town of Nantucket, was overgrown with thickets, shrubbery and vines. Today, the elevated wooden walkways provide idyllic pathways to explore intimate flowerbeds, shrubberies and privet hedges – all indigenous to Nantucket— or simply to enjoy a picnic feast on the secluded lawns. This serene spot, only a stone’s throw from the Century House provides just one more discovery for the curious island wonderer. Explore the park and discover many indigenous plants. Look…find…wander and wonder on Nantucket Island! picture courtesy of the Nantucket Land Council.

The historic Century House dates back to the Cliff Road land purchase in 1833. According to research performed by Edouard A. Stackpole, renowned Nantucket historian and former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, a member of an old Nantucket family of Scottish roots, Captain Robert Calder, built the Century House. Over the years, Capt. Calder took part in several long, successful voyages to hunt whale, and eventually completed the construction of the house in the early 1840’s. It is said that Capt. Calder chose this site because of the privacy, the ocean breezes, the views, and the genuine serenity the location provided in the 1840’s and still exhibits today. According to Mr. Stackpole, the Century House is the oldest continuously operating guesthouse on Nantucket Island to date. Visit www.centuryhouse.com for details. Season begins May 15 and ends October 15.
