Innkeeper’s Corner

Winter hosted a number of changes on Nantucket Island. Most exciting for Century House is the extension of the Cliff Road Bike Path closer to the inn’s Historic District location. Cutting the Path along the roadside was no minor feat nor expense and the telephone company is now working to complete the repositioning of poles currently in the middle of a section of the new trail.

Winter also experienced new culinary opening and surprises of old standbys gone include:

1. The dining room at Jared Coffin (where Gerry and JeanE held their wedding reception 26 years ago) has been redone as the Brick House Bistro replacing the Harbor Wok. It features a fresh perspective on American Cuisine in a classic style with a seaside touch.

2. 21 Federal becomes Ventuno, in fact the proprietor of Brick House Bistro used to be the bartender at 21 Federal. Ventuno (Italian loose for 21) is an Italian spirit with Nantucket ingredients.

3. Fusaro replaces El Rincon at 17 Old South road with an array of homemade affordably=priced Italian food in a family setting. It’s menu also includes sandwiches and a full bar.

Feedback from guests to date provide favorable reviews and my wife/Innkeeperette and I can attest to Fusaro. Our choices of veal marsala and veal parmigiana were delicious (and plentifully portioned). Best of all, Nantucket Restaurant Week is in full swing June 6 – 12 so for spontaneous travelers, this is the week to feast your culinary taste buds at rock bottom pricing!!! nantucketrestaurantweek.com

Artist in Residence Program 2011

Enters its 26th year with Gary Korlin’s arrival May 22, a renown international artist specializing in life sized figure work, landscapes, still-lives, and an ever growing demand for portraiture.  While painting wild Irises in a Nantucket field en plein aire, a writer from a local weekly paper requested an interview. Watch for the story in an upcoming edition of the publication.

Other artists this season: Catherine M. Elliott, Deborah Leonard, Leonard Mizerek, Marilyn Swift, Renee Lammers

…. And we mourn the death of Nino Kamalic ( Rockport and NY) whose services are being held Wed 6/8.  We extend our sympathies to his wife, Linda, and son Daniel.

The historic Century House dates back to the Cliff Road land purchase in 1833. According to research performed by Edouard A. Stackpole, renowned Nantucket historian and former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, a member of an old Nantucket family of Scottish roots, Captain Robert Calder, built the Century House. Over the years, Capt. Calder took part in several long, successful voyages to hunt whale, and eventually completed the construction of the house in the early 1840′s. It is said that Capt. Calder chose this site because of the privacy, the ocean breezes, the views, and the genuine serenity the location provided in the 1840′s and still exhibits today. According to Mr. Stackpole, the Century House is the oldest continuously operating guesthouse on Nantucket Island to date. Visit www.centuryhouse.com for details. Century House Wins BEST Nantucket B&B

Century House Wins BEST NANTUCKET Bed & Breakfast Inn 2011 in Cape Cod LIFE’S 2011 Best of the Cape & Islands Readers’ Poll

What a rewarding way to start the inn’s 178 Season!! Innkeeper Gerry received notification that the readership of Cape Cod Life Magazine had voted Century House the Best Nantucket B&B.

Announced in its June 2011 issue, the letter also states ”our readers have a great loyalty to the magazine, and they take pride in voting for their favorite places on the Cape and the Islands- you were voted among the very best.”

A very special thanks to each of you who have contributed to the Century House experience.

“Good Things from Nantucket’s North Shore

becomes our next door neighbor, Fran Ruley Karttunen’s Seventh book about Nantucket. Fran, a descendant of the renown Gibbs Family which owned much of the North Shore area encompassing Century House in the 1800’s, states in her Introduction that “this book is a happy marriage of memories of good food from my neighborhood and vignettes of the people who have lived and cooked here”.

Innkeeper Gerry was honored to be asked to provide his special recipe Cranberry Raisin Cinnamon Bread, a treat on his Berry Buffet Breakfast menu AND Fran has accepted the Century House Invitation to participate in some informal “Breakfast with Fran” get-togethers over the Summer, when Century House guests can chat with her and be enlightened by her tales from all of her Nantucket books:

Law and Disorder in Old Nantucket

Nantucket Places and People -

1: Main Street to the North Shore

   2: South of Main Street

   3: Out of Town

   4: Underground

You can read about Karttunen and the new book in “A Rainbow of Nantucket Books” article published in Yesterday’s Island June 2-8 Issue. Of her they say “”Frances might just be the most interesting person on this island. If you’re lucky enough to meet her, you might even wager on that supposition.”
