Holiday Season 2005: Joy, Love, Peace

Dear Nantucket Lover: The 2005 season has slowed down, leaves have fallen, apple-cinnamon scents fill the air, holiday greetings and cheer are everywhere..! With the new year soon upon us, an exciting season also awaits. The coming of the new year brings promises of new beginnings, infinite possibilities, unbroken resolutions, new captions and memories to be added to the album of life. Nantucket remains a place of escape, tucked away somewhere far off – Indigenous, tranquil, soothing to the spirit. One hundred years from now, it will still be true to its origins.

 Reflecting on the 2005 Season
Tis’ the Season to be Jolly! Most vacationers have left, taking with them all their cherished memories of an enjoyable summer, leaving only footprints in the sand. Century House also enjoyed an eventful 2005 season. After 22 Seasons of 24/7 innkeeping, Gerry & JeanE decided it was time to lighten their workload and integrated a fuller staff complement to handle the Century House. Last issue we introduced you to two of these team members, and future issues will highlight others. Gerry continues to reign over his scrumptious “Berry Buffet Breakfast” and macro-management; and JeanE holds down their real estate sales in Florida, commuting through-out the Summer.  We also hosted press trips during the Wine Festival, debuted its First Professional Artists’ Workshop in June (featured on TV on the Cn8 program “Your Morning”), along with our Forbes.com recognition as one of the “Top Eastern US destinations,” our historic inn has much to reflect on and share once again.

 Spotlight: Red Dahlia

This recently renovated oversized corner room, features wide pine floors, coffered ceiling, Ralph Lauren wall coverings and fabrics in the king bedroom and bath. A 19th Century restored bureau and a make-up table and chair complete the furniture in the Red Dahlia, along with a loveseat reading nook and Gerry’s Aunt Marguerite’s antique cedar hope chest.

The marble floor in the bath sets off the deep tub and large vanity. As a final touch, the sisal rug and original oil paintings make the Red Dahlia a bright, quiet room and certainly one of the most popular at the Century House. Contact us to book this room for your next visit to Nantucket.  Red Dahlia King…

The historic Century House dates back to the Cliff Road land purchase in 1833. According to research performed by Edouard A. Stackpole, renowned Nantucket historian and former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, a member of an old Nantucket family of Scottish roots, Captain Robert Calder, built the Century House.
Over the years, Capt. Calder took part in several long, successful voyages to hunt whale, and eventually completed the construction of the house in the early 1840’s. It is said that Capt. Calder chose this site because of the privacy, the ocean breezes, the views, and the genuine serenity the location provided in the 1840’s and still exhibits today.  According to Mr. Stackpole, the Century House is the oldest continuously operating guesthouse on Nantucket Island to date. Visit www.centuryhouse.com for details. Season begins May 15 and ends around October 15.  Full Story

“Little Known Treasures”

Here is this issue’s “Little Known Treasures” jewel. Many of you are familiar with the Century House’s passion for the art community. The art collection visible in the inn is only a glimpse into a long history of interest. Did you know that behind this interest lays a century of Connick Artists?Although Innkeeper Gerry’s cousin, Harry Connick Jr. is known for his music and acting artistry, the work – and words of Gerry’s Great Uncle, Charles J. Connick precede Harry’s talent.

“I want to make beautiful interiors for both churches and souls… I want (all people) to hear my windows singing.”Charles J. Connick A peer of Tiffany

Charles Connick went on to create stained glass windows that grace Centers of prayer, learning and healing through-out the US and Europe . including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Nantucket! Check out this hidden treasure during your next stay. AND, the next time you experience the magnificence of stainglass, perhaps it is a work by Gerry’s ancestry. St. Patrick’s, St. John the Divine in NYC, the chapel at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Public Library and Princeton University are some of the other places where you can discover the beauty of Connick stained glass art.
