OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATING GUESTHOUSE ON NANTUCKET COMPLETES A FIVE YEAR RENOVATIONS
Century House Welcomes You to 178th Season
(Nantucket, MA) – May 1, 2011 We will welcome Season 2011 at the Century House located on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, with updates and changes to enhance the open spirit of Nantucket. During the 178th Off-Season, much has been accomplished at Century House. Century House’s five year plan for the inn renovation is now coming to completion. The many guest rooms consist of those that were used year round since the original completion of Century House in the late 1830-s; the major rooms in the 19th century were heated by wood burning fireplaces which are still in the rooms but have been replaced by individual HVAC units for safety, comfort and convenience.
Sound proofing has been added and the traditional wide plank wood flooring has been refinished. Rooms were restored to mirror traditional guest rooms in Cliff Road Summer cottages which complimented the Sea 1890 Cliff Hotel (since demolished) with an added array of 2011 features. Chief among the extra amenities are the generous assortment of hard-covered books for Summer light reading. A large collection of original artwork executed by artists from the Century House Artist in Residence Program along with the Innkeepers’ personal collection is displayed around the inn and in the guest rooms. There is a large number of DVD’s and books available for use in the guest rooms
One of the inn’s most popular smaller rooms – Sweet Pea – has also been re-built from its bones to reflect a clean summer cottage feel. Almost all of Century House rooms are corner rooms offering superb cross ventilation and the Nantucket’s North Shore famous breezes (although all rooms have individual air conditioning and heat). Two rooms that are not corner rooms enjoy both glimpses of the sea and a sky light above the sleigh bed for star gazing on the clearest of Island night skies and, of course, extra ventilation.
The patio, wrap-around veranda, and the garden have seen a major renovation as well.
Nantucket presents itself as the ideal safe destination for a short air or sea voyage much as it has since the late 19th century. Come enjoy the Season’s many celebrations. Here are some of the events happening this season:

Century House dates back to the Cliff Road land purchase in 1833. According to research performed by Edouard A. Stackpole, renowned Nantucket historian and former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, the Century House was built by a member of an old Nantucket family of Scottish roots, Captain Robert Calder. It is said that Capt. Calder chose this site because of the privacy, the ocean breezes, the views, and the genuine serenity the location provided in the 1840’s and still exhibits today. According to Mr. Stackpole, the Century House is the oldest continuously operating guesthouse on Nantucket Island.
