Nantucket Lover:
The sky is not the limit. On Nantucket you are free
to discover little known treasures...
"Everywhere water is a thing of beauty, gleaming
in the dew-drop; singing in the summer rain; shining in
the ice-gems till the leaves all seem to turn to living
jewels; spreading a golden veil over the setting sun; or
a white gauze around the midnight moon..."
A Glass of Water, John B. Gough
(1817- 1886)

Romance "By the Sea" |
 |
|
July 2, 2006 was a “high water mark”
for Brian D. Porch, Jr. and Mary Rinaldi for it
was then - tucked into the privacy of the sand
dunes on the Jetties Beach during a picturesque
sunset – that Brian asked Mary to marry him!
Pictured from left are Brian and Mary
presenting their paddleball rackets and beach
football to our very own Otilia as a thanks for
their enjoyable stay! So for good fortune,
future “wanna-be’s” can now reserve the gaming
equipment during their stay at the Century
House!!
Brian, originally from Bloomfield,
Connecticut, lives and works in New York City,
where he and Mary, originally from Beaverton,
Oregon, met. Mary remarked to Otilia and JeanE
that, "the quaint and comforting charm of the
Century House provided an exclamation point of
romance on what turned out to be a magical
weekend.” Innkeeper Gerry was relieved that
the diamond didn’t slip out of Brian’s hand and
get buried in a dune of sand (worse than finding
a needle in the haystack!)

An Artist's Love Affair with the 'Masters of the
Sea' |
 |
|
Julia O'Malley-Keyes, one of our
master artists who joined Century House Art
Program last year has a long time romance
with big J-boats, classic yachts and costal
living. These are reflected in her penchant for
luminous oil paintings of these beautiful
masters of the sea. Julia has been painting
since she was 8 years old. She has worked with
Harry Connick Jr. She has spent many
years studying with noted fine artists in
Europe, China, New York City and on Cape Cod.
Her father and yearly excursions to Newport,
Camden, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard resulted
in her action packed oil paintings and limited
edition marine prints of the numerous classic
yacht regattas of the summer season. Julia says,
“The sea is in my blood.” "It seems
completely natural that as a mature artist I
have focused on marine art, it feels like coming
home”.
Her unsurpassed use of vibrant color and
luminosity executed in an Old Masters' technique
faithfully conveys the sense of place, the ebb
and flow and the thrill of big yacht racing.

September 8 - September 16, at the Robert
Wilson Gallery, one of the many galleries on Nantucket.

Spotlight: the Beach-Blossom |
 |
|
Queen sleigh with love seat, skylight.
A cozy third floor European style room with
glimpses of the blue ocean. In the room you
will find plenty of books to read, a comfortable
queen sleigh bed under a skylight, which has
marble floored private detached bath and a love
seat with harbor views. This room has a paddle
fan, an old book covered sea chest and unique
wall hangings.
Guest Comment: “Whimsical skylight
over the bed greeted us in the morning light (we
left the shade up); and at night we followed the
stars in the swirling sky”
The Beach-Blossom's horticultural name is
Rosa Ragosa; its pink flower cascades over the
dunes, sea grass and fences making it the room
choice to complement our water theme!!

Little Known Treasures ~~~Nantucket Water
~~~
|
|
|
|
Water in its pure form is a tasteless,
odorless, colorless liquid essential to all
known forms of life. In large quantities it
appears to be blue. Facts we remember
from school: chemical formula - H2O; two-thirds
of the Earth is water; the human body is 75%
water.
Little Known Treasures: Nantucket Water
One often asks, where does the Island's
supply of drinking water comes from? And, the
answer is: it comes from two different levels of
aquifer within the Earth recharged naturally by
the rainfall making it the best tasting water
from a sprout according the Innkeeperette, JeanE.
Losses to the aquifer occur by the discharge
of fresh water at the coast and groundwater
pumping. To lessen the impact on groundwater
levels, the Island relies upon the cooperation
of its customers and visitors to use its supply
conservatively especially during peak Season use
periods.
I MUST down to the seas again, to the lonely
sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to
steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and
the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey
dawn breaking.
I must down to the seas again, for the call
of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not
be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white
clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and
the sea-gulls crying.
I must down to the seas again to the vagrant
gypsy life.
To the gull's way and the whale's way......
John Masefield, 1878
---------------------------------------------------
The historic Century House dates back
to the Cliff Road land purchase in 1833.
According to research performed by Edouard A.
Stackpole, renowned Nantucket historian and
former director of the Peter Foulger Museum, a
member of an old Nantucket family of Scottish
roots, Captain Robert Calder, built the Century
House. Over the years, Capt. Calder took part in
several long, successful voyages to hunt whale,
and eventually completed the construction of the
house in the early 1840’s. It is said that Capt.
Calder chose this site because of the privacy,
the ocean breezes, the views, and the genuine
serenity the location provided in the 1840’s and
still exhibits today. According to Mr. Stackpole,
the Century House is the oldest continuously
operating guesthouse on Nantucket Island to
date. Visit www.centuryhouse.com for details.
Season begins May 15 and ends October 15.
