"Creativity takes courage."
Claude Monet
One of the greatest virtues in
life is courage. Courage to become
who you are meant to be, courage to
discover your talents and the
passion to pursue them. Nantucket
lovers share the desire to be free
and to pursue hidden talents.
Century House welcomes yet another
talent!
Thomas William Heinsohn is a
member of the Basketball Hall of
Fame and a part of the Boston
Celtics team that won eight NBA
titles in nine years. After his
playing days were over, he became
the Celtics' head coach for eight
years and was named Coach of the
Year. Nowadays, Tom enjoys
painting, with Don Mosher,
master painter and fellow
artist, Bill Fein, all of whom
stayed at the Century House early
June, capturing a part of Nantucket
on canvas. Of the Century House he
said: "The hospitality was great!
Gerry is a gifted conversationalist.
The art in the inn is a measure of
the fine people and artists who have
stayed at the Inn. In short, you'll
throughly enjoy your stay at the
Century House."

The Master Artist and The
Apprentices! |
 |
|
Master Artist Don Mosher,
a Century House artist-in-residence
since the late '80's selected Tom
Heinsohn and Bill Fein to
accompany his Charrette early June.
Pictured to the left are Don and
Bill painting in Sconset. Don's work
has been featured in several
national publications including
Yankee and American Artist Magazine.
Mosher's paintings hang in the
permanent collections of large
corporations, institutions, banks,
and private homes throughout the
United States and abroad including
the Peabody Museum, Portland Art
museum, and the State House in
Boston. As adept with watercolor as
he is with oils, Donald Allen Mosher
moves freely between the two and his
vivid expressive impressionist
interpretations of New England in
oils form a delightful counterpoint
to his softer, gentler watercolor
compositions.

Nantucket In A Bucket of
Sketching!!! |
 |
|
The Century House, in partnership
with noted island artist, who offers
sketching classes during the season, Anne
Baldwin Butler, celebrates the
fourth season offering its Nantucket-In-A-Bucket-of-Sketching. The
package offers a two or three
week-night stay at the Inn, with
mornings of art instruction with Anne. Both the Century House and
Anne's Sketching Tours have been
recommended by Fodor's Guides to
Nantucket and The Boston
Globe.
The Century House innkeepers have
created the quintessential artist's
inn with its fine collection of
Nantucket paintings, enthusiasm for
the arts and charming
accommodations. Vast sketching
opportunities await as you meander
through the winding streets of
Nantucket Town and 'Sconset. Anne's
outdoor classroom will teach you how
to reproduce the essence of a unique
doorway, a perennial garden, or the
historic architecture of a 17th
century home.

Featured Hydranga Room |
 |
|
This newsletter features Hydranga,
a guest room with deep, artistic,
historic roots...Craftsman Quille
Cromie, called this room "home"
during his years as Nantucket's last
Island Blacksmith.
Quille maintained his shop by
Macy's Warehouse on Straight Wharf.
He came and went without notice by
other guests because Hydranga
features a street level garden
entrance, complete with its
namesake flowering bush.

Historic Century House |
 |
|
The historic Century House dates
back to the Cliff Road land purchase
in 1833. According to research
performed by Edouard A. Stackpole,
renowned Nantucket historian and
former director of the Peter Foulger
Museum, a member of an old Nantucket
family of Scottish roots, Captain
Robert Calder, built the Century
House. Over the years, Capt. Calder
took part in several long,
successful voyages to hunt whale,
and eventually completed the
construction of the house in the
early 1840’s. It is said that Capt.
Calder chose this site because of
the privacy, the ocean breezes, the
views, and the genuine serenity the
location provided in the 1840’s and
still exhibits today. According to
Mr. Stackpole, the Century House is
the oldest continuously operating
guesthouse on Nantucket Island to
date. Visit www.centuryhouse.com for
details. Season begins May 15 and
ends October 15.

World's First Woman Astronomer
Has Her Roots On Nantucket!
|
|
|
|
LITTLE KNOWN TREASURES:
This issue highlights the work of
the Artist-of-artists with
the help of the renown Maria
Mitchell Association's (MMA)
Loines Observatory (pictured
above) where Islanders and
visitors alike become stargazers and
learn which constellations are
visible in Nantucket's night sky.
PACKAGES AVAILABLE!
Maria Mitchell (1818-1889)
was born on Nantucket and called the
Island her home for life. She was
the first professional woman
astronomer, first woman
professor of Vassar and first woman
to discover a comet in 1847 which
was named after her, the MITCHELL.
FACT: During this time Captain
Calder had opened the doors of the
Century House to the islanders.
Her observatory was above her
father's bank at the top of Main
Street. In addition to several
historic museums (including her
birth-home) affiliated with Ms.
Mitchell, the MMA bosts two
observatories on the island, where
the visitors can observe the
Universe's artistry - weather
permitting.
The Association celebrates its
opening of the 2006 Season on June
13th. We celebrate Nantucket's
hidden treasures - art and the
Master Artist!
