"WHAT'S THAT SMELL? -
Gerry Connick is so good at that whole innkeeper thing that
Martha Stewart Living Radio decided to call him up and get a few
on-air tips,
Gerry spends half the year
as chief cook, bottle-washer, electrician and comptroller at the
175-year-old Century House B&B on Nantucket.
His 10 commandments of
hospitality included no wall to wall carpeting ("the wood should
not be covered by anything other that a small area rug"); lots
of reading material; no scented candles or "home fragrances" of
any kind except for the smell of freshly brewed coffee
("starting at 4:30 a.m. for the early risers") and a
"welcoming," triple-sheeted bed with lots of pillows.
This last part confused us a bit, since we
have been known to nod off at the blood-pressure
machine at Publix with nary a welcome, and halve little idea of
the significances of three sheets unless it's followed by the
phrase "to the wind."
But Gerry's wife,
Jean-Ellen Heron, says that's the way it's done at thigh-class
joints.
Which explains why it's news to us.
